Research Plan Goals
Goal 1
As a user esearcher, I want to understand why people attend
festivals.
Goal 2
As a user researcher, I want to understand how people hear about festivals.
Goal 3
As a user researcher, I want to understand what an idea festival /local event website would look like.
User Research insight
During user interviews and surveys, we discovered that our potential users are turning to art and cultural outlets by attending local events and festivals in a post-quarantine world. We also discovered that most people are notified of community events through social media platforms. Users discussed the drawbacks of logging onto current platforms and wished to find an alternative space where they can continue to be notified of festivals without needing to filter through irrelevant information.

Survey Data:
We first conducted research with five interviews through zoom, to better understand how people felt about local events and festivals. It was important further understand how our potential users felt about local events and how they learn about them.

We conducted further research using a survey via Google forms. The data provided more insight on how users utilize social media and their attitudes towards COVID and socializing.
After reviewing the data from our survey, we concluded that users want to be notified of festivals and events in their area through a more direct media platform. We might be able to help if we offer an alternative platform for users to stay informed of festivals and community events without the cluttered features of social media.

Affinity: Issues uncovered
Our key findings from users interviews and the surveys confirmed that social media is the number one way to find out about local events. This was despite some negative features about social media reported by users, including the difficulty of navigating social media platforms and the potential of an overcrowded feed.

Meet our user: user - persona
We concluded our research process with a user-persona: Joaquin, a public school teacher who misses attending local events and festivals. He is still concerned with COVID levels and would like to know who of his friends and family members are attending these local events.
There are two major barriers to Joaquin getting back out there:
-
He avoids social media if he can help it. He dislikes filtering through events he is not interested in.
-
He tries to remain as COVID conscious as possible with restrictions being lifted. He prefers to be outdoors to reduce the risk and for the attendance allotment to be low. He is looking for an app that has the best of both worlds.

Problem Statement
Current social media platforms are designed to keep an online network of friends and maintain social circles. We have observed that social media platforms are not meeting the needs of users and non-users who seek to be informed specifically about local events and festivals in their community.
The functionality of current social media platforms is causing users and non-users to avoid logging on and therefore, are not being informed of local events. Non-users typically research events on Google to then peruse through multiple pages, causing them to waste time. COVID risks are still a concern for festival goers and users would like a way to assess any risk of attending any functions.
How might we relieve user and non-user frustration with event research so that these festival goers can attend events and successfully experience engaging in the local culture knowing their COVID risks?
value proposition statement
Musable is a social media platform that focuses on informing users of festivals, purchasing admission to events and providing information for users to determine COVID risks. Users are notified of which family members or friends are interested or going to an event. Users will also know the projected number of attendees and if an event is outdoors or indoors due to COVID concerns. Doing this will allow users to stay connected to the local art and music community and festival circuit.

PRIORITY MATRIX:
The top three features that I would add our new festival website are:
-
Information regarding COVID safety regulations and risk.
-
Ability to buy tickets ahead of time.
-
A feature that would allow users to know which friends are family are attending a specific event.

Guerilla Testing
Only Task 3 has less than 100% success rate. However, all five participants had constructive comments and feedback on how to improve Musable.

Affinity Map #2
After conducting guerilla testing, below are the design changes what were prioritized in our mid-fidelity prototype:
-
Include an "enable location button."

-
Emphasize the share button once tickets have been purchased.

-
Making the location of the event more visible on the feed page.

user flow iterations
-
Adding location services
-
Adding a share button
-
Emphasize outdoor/indoor information and number of attendees on the event page.

Reflections

Conducting the user insight research a second time and prototyping a new app, helped to further solidify my understanding of the UX/UI design process. I realized how much reiterating is required of design thinking. If we were to continue developing the app, I would like to elaborate on our features related to COVID risk and safety.
